Yes. Kainote is free and open source under the GPL-3.0-or-later licence. There are no ads, accounts or telemetry.
Yes. Kainote runs Automation 4 Lua macros through LuaJIT and is compatible with Aegisub scripts. The download bundles DependencyControl, ASSFoundation, Aegisub-Motion and more.
Kainote is also a full video player (DirectShow on Windows, GStreamer on Linux), with FFMS2 for frame-exact work. It opens more formats natively (SRT, MPL2, MicroDVD, TMP), and adds tabs, a translation mode, subtitle comparison, filtering, and visual tools like the Hydra all-tags editor and fullscreen zoom.
Yes, from 1.1.0. The Linux build uses wxGTK with GStreamer and FFMS2, SDL or VAAPI video output and SDL/PulseAudio audio. It comes as a portable runtime package with desktop integration. Wayland works, with a few limitations.
Both libass and VSFilter are available through CSRI, so you can check your typesetting in the renderer your viewers use.
The Windows package includes KaiNote_AVX.exe, built for CPUs with AVX support. It can be faster on modern processors. Use the regular Kainote.exe if it won’t start.
Translations live on Weblate. Kainote speaks 15 languages so far, and anything unfinished falls back to English.
Every push to master is built on GitHub Actions. Grab the artifacts from the build workflow (you need to be signed in to GitHub; they're kept for 90 days).
